The general rule when looking at structural roots for construction tree protection is anywhere from 1 to 1.5 times the diameter of the trunk expressed in feet is where they are. Example 20 inch maple, structural roots are out as far as 20 to 30 feet. This has a lot to do with the soil as well. If the tree was planted in a development where the soil basically sucks, the roots may not go much beyond the planting hole. I hope this is helpfull, with out confusing the situation any further.
